in texas holdem freezeout SNG tournament poker on the internet, why do so many players overbet the pot?
i have never seen a poker book recommend routinely overbetting the pot, but i see this bet happen in unraised pots on the flop after the small blind has completed the bet and the big blind has checked.
for instance, if the blinds are t$ 75 150, there will be 300 in the pot on the flop after the small blind completes the bet and the big blind checks. at this point, regardless of the texture of the flop, i regularly see one of the two players bet 450 to take it down on the flop.
what is the theory behind overbetting in lieu of just betting the pot? is it agreed that ROUTINELY overbetting an “up-for-grabs” pot is a beginners move, or is this a legitimate play that i should use myself? (usually if i am betting in this position it would be a pot-sized bet unless there is some special circumstances like short stacks, bubble play, or an unusual board like 3 of a kind or 3 to a straight flush). thanks for all your advice in advance!
Generally what i’ve found for sng and mtt tournaments is the majority of people who overbet the pot are on a stone cold bluff (these overbets usually only occur in plentiful amounts at the low buy in tables). However this is a good tactic to use if you believe an overbet may make the other player think your bluffing when you have the nuts than go for it. In the end it comes down to whether or not you think they are stealing or not, just trust your instincts mate.
