Recovering Charles – Chapter 6 Excerpt
It was three days ago called Jerome.
"One can not ignore, Luke." Jordan sat down next to me in a booth in a delicatessen on 7th Avenue.
I took a bite of my dill pickles.
"He might think, you come already on the way too. You can not surprise him to leave, Luke. You can not. "
I remembered she was helping, or at least try.
"It I'm sorry. I know that's your thing. I want to help. "She began a second layer of cream cheese on their onion bagel.
"I know you do. "I finished my pickle." I would call him again to say, at least to him, I can not do it. This is to do the right thing. "
"You're serious?"
"Of course."
"You will not go looking for it your father?" You're not interested?
Curious? He could be living somewhere. He could look for you. "
"Jordy, it is my cell came. Call he had."
"If he in trouble. "
I shook my empty soda cup and reached over to grab her ¬.
"Luke, you're right, it is not my thing. I'm sorry I push. "
I drank her soda straw to the last drop drew loud. "I … I just do not know what I would win, by clicking on an expedition. When he was in New Orleans when the storm hit, and if his friends have not seen or heard of him, he's probably gone. And I'm OK it. I know his heart was good, although we drifted apart. There were no hard feelings between us the last time we spoke. No regrets. "I said the words of hope they would be true. They did not.
"Then I will support you. What is best for you. I'm all in."

All in. I remember the first time I heard Dad say those words. Dad's friend, Kaiser suggested a poker night died during the vacation of the Year Grandma's. He showed with five or six guys from the company and a brand new pack of cards from Caesars Palace, he had taken on a business trip to Las Vegas. sat on the first night a Table in the basement drinking beer and playing Texas Hold'em. I do a movie on the big rear-projection TVs are glued father had bought, but poker and its Strategies fascinated me. Probably more than that, I'd just like to laugh hearing Dad.
That night was the first of many poker nights. It did not take everyone for Dad long to acquire for a real poker table. He also bought a special table for cash, real poker chips, a dealer stupid visor, and an expensive make sure the money in.
He said it was not complete until he built go to the bar in the basement with him.
Sometimes I have observed. Sometimes Dad had his guys playing a round with pretzel sticks so I could sit on mama did not seem to mind when I asked her what she thought about it. You did not think much of everything.
Dad's group played every Friday evening. And, although dad do not always win, they always played in his basement where he could keep an eye on mom and there when she needed him.
Dad was lonely during Mom's last year, but he was determined to survive and they would break their addiction. He prayed for them, as they mixed in a slow circuit of the bed in the fridge to the couch in the living room to the medicine cabinet and back to bed. He prayed that they would be better feel, sleep better, be in a better mood when she woke from her nap Daylong. He prayed it would ease mood swings.
He He prayed she could save.
Unfortunately I do not think Mama always understood how lonely Dad had become without her.
In rare cases, Mama a dinner or a Sunday drive to speak, but I think she did it to appease us more than the opportunity to breathe fresh air or remember what Fort Worth looked like. We dragged a couple of Dallas Mavericks basketball games to do she did not want to enjoy and a movie or two.
And Papa said, although they stopped to say yes.
"I will never stop to ask, my darling, because I love you."
"I know Charles, I know. But let me sleep now. I'm exhausted. "
"How about next with a trip to the North? Oklahoma City week?"
"You have to work, Charles."
"I could take a couple of days."
"You have taken weeks, Charles. Maybe next month. I go in the next month. "
They did not.
"My darling, you made for breakfast? Pancakes? Waffle House? Maybe we could stop by the nursery and could you help me get some new plants for around the fountain in the front. "
"No thanks, Charles. You and Luke go. Bring me back something to eat."
"Next time, then:" Dad has always said.
"Sure. Next time I promise I will go next time."
They do not.
Right after Grandma died, is located Papa to visit for an in-home therapist a few times. Mama was so friendly, they listened, they nodded at all the appropriate places. But when the consultant suggested that it was time for mom to her mother by respect back to work, she asked Dad to a "short breather" from the sessions.
"But you'll see her again, right? It is really good, my dear. One of the best in Arlington. "
"Yes, Charles, it is. Just not for a while. Only a breather. I'm really better. Really better. "
"All right, then. A couple of weeks and you will see her again?"
"I will."
They did not.
